CHM2201   Organic Chemistry 1   (10 credits)

Year Running: 2017/2018
Credit level: F5

Description

This module addresses several fundamental areas of organic chemistry and commences with a description of the conformational behaviour of simple organic compounds. This is combined with stereochemical considerations to demonstrate the importance that three dimensional structure has for the reactivity and spectroscopic properties of organic compounds. The module continues with an introduction to substitution and elimination reactions. The concept of aromaticity will be described and defined, and electrophilic and nucleophilic substitution reactions in aromatic systems covered in detail.
